Project Overview
SENIOR PROJECT OVERVIEW
DIRECTIONS: Explain each area in 35 to 50 words.
Name: Madison King
Title of Project: Homers for Childhood Obesity
Title of Research Paper: Childhood Obesity: The Rapid Growing Epidemic
Synopsis of Research Paper:
My research paper includes an in-depth analysis of childhood obesity, how it’s caused, how one can prevent or cure childhood obesity, and legal issues involving parents or legal guardians who are being charged with abuse and neglect for letting their child become too obese.
Project Description:
For my project, I hosted a homerun derby which was for middle school and high school girls only. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness for childhood obesity and for them to get active! I collected donations of used sports equipment for admission, and the donations were given to the Boys and Girls Club off of Rosemont Road.
Relationship between Project and Paper:
The central idea of my paper is whether childhood obesity is developed by nature, or by nurture, meaning are you born with it or is it a result of your habits. Childhood obesity is an epidemic among children of all ages. By performing a homerun derby with young women in the community, I will be enforcing the negative impact of childhood obesity, and I will hopefully make an impact on them to eat the right things and exercise properly every day.
My background experience in the area:
Leading up to senior project, I didn’t know much about childhood obesity, except for the fact that it is a major problem. I knew that obesity was a vast problem within America, and that children are now becoming obese at even younger ages than records have ever shown.
Special things I’d like judges to consider and look for:
I’d like the judges to look for my personal connection to the topic of childhood obesity. I’d also like them to consider the stress related with putting together my project; I had to change my project from what my project was originally supposed to be, and that the weather caused my project to be canceled and changed to the following week.
