Who Am I?My name is Madison King and I’m a senior at First Colonial High School. After graduating from the Legal Studies Academy at First Colonial, I plan on pursuing a masters degree in Inter Disciplinary Liberal Studies (IDLS) and a minor in Elementary Education at James Madison
University. Last year, I was offered a scholarship to play softball at James Madison, and I accepted. After completing my 5 year program for education at JMU, I plan on coaching the high school softball team at First Colonial High School.
I value teaching more than most because of my strong passion for kids. I always look at the best in others, especially in children. My topic for my senior project is childhood obesity. I chose this topic because of my strong passion for children, but also because obesity is a major issue within my family's genetics. My brother is overweight and it effects his life everyday. He has also been classified as being "big" for as long as I can remember. I wanted to find out exactly why people become obese, especially children. Throughout my research (and my 15 page paper), I found that genetics and the environment are the leading contributors. This school year, I am a kick-off mentor for FCHS. This means I mentor a group of freshmen and make sure they have the best first year possible here at FC. I am also involved in Mock Trial, DECA, Model Judiciary, FCCLA, and FEA. This year, I am the Vice President of the Future Educators Association (FEA) which is the club involved with Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow (VTFT), and last year I was nominated as Secretary. |

Why I Chose This ProjectI have played Varsity Softball for First Colonial for all my 4 years at the academy. I have been honored as Beach District Player of the year, Regional Player of the Year, All Tidewater, and have been honored as First Team All State Shortstop.
Softball has been in my life since I was 4 years old. I don't know anything better than I do softball. For my senior project class, we were told to pick an event that we would like to conduct, that is about about our 15 page research paper. I originally chose to do a field day with my students at Alanton Elementary School, but I forgot that they already have a field day set up at the end of the year. I was crushing for time to find a new project. This is when I came up with the idea of hosting a home run derby. Because of my record held last year, 11 home runs in 1 season (the most held by anyone in the city), a home run derby would fit me perfectly! |
